Country: New Zealand

The cinema of New Zealand can only be described as varied and multifaceted, it is one of the world’s most vibrant film cultures, a reflection of the country’s evolving history and the energy and resourcefulness of its people. Much of the early cinema made in New Zealand has been lost, however the Kiwi cinema burst onto the global stage in the 1970s and has maintained its high-profile international presence ever since. Jane Campion's The Piano (1993) won three Academy Awards. Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures (1994) and Lee Tamahori's Once Were Warriors also gained international critical acclaim and high grosses in a number of countries. The Kiwi director Peter Jackson became noticed by Hollywood, and directed the phenomenally successful Lord of the Rings films (2001). Apart from Lord of the Rings, other Hollywood movies filmed in New Zealand include Vertical Limit (2000), The Last Samurai (2003), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), and Bridge to Terabithia (2007). Due to the relatively small size of its film industry, many New Zealand-made films are co-productions with companies based in other nations. New Zealand production companies have also worked on the visual effects of big Hollywood movies like King Kong, Avatar, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Download this collection of New Zealand movies that reflect the vibrancy, resourcefulness and heart of New Zealand filmmaking.
